Bhabananda Barbayan
He is a leading figure in Sattriya dance, a classical Indian art form rooted in the monasteries of Assam since the 15th century. Initiated into the practice at the age of four, he was awarded the title of Barbayan at sixteen, making him one of the youngest recipients of this honor.
As a dancer, choreographer, musician, and teacher, Bhabananda has played a vital role in preserving and evolving Sattriya dance. He is the founder of the Sattriya Academy in New Delhi and has shared his expertise at prestigious institutions worldwide, including Paris-VIII University, King’s College London, and Brown University in the United States.
His performances have been acclaimed internationally, with shows in over 36 countries, contributing to the global recognition of Sattriya dance.
Bhabananda’s academic journey reflects his deep commitment to this art form, holding dual master’s degrees in Geography and Assamese Literature from Dibrugarh University, along with a PhD from Rabindra Bharati University, where he also led research in the Department of Dance.
Today, Bhabananda Barbayan stands as a bridge between tradition and innovation, working tirelessly to pass on and expand this living heritage of Indian cultural expression.
