Bhabananda Barbayan is a dancer and teacher of Sattriya dance. He was born on the river island of Majuli in Assam, India, and was adopted into the Sattra Monastic System at the age of four. As a Vaishnavi monk, he received training in Sattriya dance and music and became an artistic master at the age of sixteen. He completed a Ph.D. at the Rabindra Bharati University in West Bengal, focusing on academic research into Sattriya Dance and has contributed to the establishment of the Assamese institute in Delhi. He has taught and performed, on his own and with his group of monks, at the "Musée Quai Branly" in France, the "British Museum" in London, "Symphony Space" in New York, and "Brown University" in the USA, among others. He is dedicated to transmitting his art and collaborating with artists internationally, bridging the gap between classical forms and contemporary performing arts.
